Il ritratto di Dorian Gray. (‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’)

Cod.: STR0048

DESCRIPTION:
With this volume, edited by Telecom Italia and dedicated to “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde, he revives the traditional formula of the Strenna Olivetti books: the illustrations, in fact, were specifically commissioned to Agostino Arrivabene.
The book tells of the handsome Dorian, who manages to preserve intact both his youth and success, despite the debauchery to which he abandons himself: it is in fact a portrait of himself, kept hidden, to age in his place. A manifesto of English decadence greeted by Victorian criticism with scandal and furious polemics, and a compendium of Wildian “philosophy” in its denial of all beliefs aside from pleasure, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ (1890) affirms the supremacy of the artist over moral laws and social conventions. These were ideas that Wilde practiced and paid for himself, seeking to “live his life as a work of art” and defend the values of art, culture, and man.
